Full Scholarships for Adolescent Substance Abuse Competencies Training at 2007 North Carolina Summer School

The DMHDDSAS, in partnership with The N.C. Foundation for Alcohol and Drug Studies and UNC Grensboro is offering full scholarships to a maximum of 30 individuals to attend 'An Introduction to Adolescent Substance Abuse Core Competencies' course at the 2007 North Carolina Summer School for Alcohol and Drug Studies.
 

AA170. AN INTRODUCTION TO ADOLESCENT SUBSTANCE ABUSE COMPETENCIES

LEVEL: Basic

DESCRIPTION: Despite drug prevention efforts, adolescent substance abuse continues to be a concern.  One of the challenges in assessment and treatment is the very nature of adolescence.  The rapid growth of the brain and body during adolescent years, emotional and social influences on adolescent behavior, ethical dilemmas regarding legal status, autonomy, and confidentiality and treatment engagement and retention among other factors present unique issues for substance abuse and mental health counselors, treatment programs, and families.  To address some of these unique challenges, this track/course will provide an overview of best practice in adolescent substance abuse screening, assessment, and treatment.

The Summer School will be held from July 29 to August 2, 2007 at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington in Wilmington, North Carolina. http://www.ncfads.org/aboutschool.html. The school format features an emphasis on in-depth study and is designed to serve the needs of persons working in the field of substance abuse treatment.

The application process is as follows:Step 1. Submit your name to Caroline Mosely at UNC-G via  e mail  at FCMOSELE@uncg.edu by 5.00  on June 1st. Individuals accpted on a first come, first serve basis.

Step 2. You will be notificatied of approval from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro by 6-8-07. 
Step 3. Persons on the approved list should then promptly register online at www.ncfads.org

This training is part of an initiative of the federally funded North Carolina Adolescent Substance Abuse Treatment Project which is working to build a sustainable infrastructure that strengthens the capacity of North Carolina to deliver substance abuse treatment to youth and their families.
