Families Needed for a Pediatric/Psychiatric Change Study

How would you like to help improve your pediatricians’ or family practice doctor’s skills in detecting and treating early warning signs of mental illness/behavioral issues in children ages 12-l8?

NAMI NC is looking for a few families (one per site, with one backup) (Mom and Dad and child, or Mom or Dad and child) who live near or can drive to these cities:

  • Clinton
  • Asheville
  • Southern Pines
  • Henderson
  • Thomasville

What’s required?

A willing Mom or Dad and a child with a behavioral health diagnosis (any, including ADHD) ages 12-l8

One two hour training session

One two hour doctor intervention session

NAMI is working in collaboration with the NC Pediatric Society and researchers from Johns Hopkins University to demonstrate improvement of communication skills by primary care doctors in addressing mental health and behavioral issues.  This can be a lot of fun- the family agrees to “act out” three brief scenarios that will help study whether the training is effective in getting doctors to improve their skills.

What’s in it for the families?

NAMI NC will award a stipend for each visit, and travel expenses

You will help the advancement of improved care by primary care practitioners detecting warning signs

You can put this on your resume, and will receive a certificate of appreciation

The project must be completed by end of June.  Please contact Gloria Harrison at NAMINC, (919) 788-0801 or gharrison@naminc.org if you are interested in participating.  We'd love to hear from you by April 20.
