Recovery

Recovery is about regaining control of your life and striving for your personal dreams. It's a journey, not a destination.

Consumers throughout North Carolina are achieving recovery. Our dreams are as varied as each of are as individuals. One may desire to go to Raleigh and advocate for consumer's rights. Another may join or start a consumer council or support group in their area. Or his or her dream might be to have a book of poems published, or paintings exhibited in a local coffee shop.

Often the biggest obstacle to Recovery is not being sure which path to take.

Hopefully through this web page, you can be better informed about where to find the information needed to achieve your goals. You will find this web page is divided into different sections that will attempt to address the many possibilities of interest you have.

NAMI support groups are available across North Carolina, as well as across the United States.

Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA)
The Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA), a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization, is a patient-directed organization focusing on depression and bipolar disorder. It has a grassroots network of more than1,000 patient-run support groups across the country

DBSA support groups are available in North Carolina.

Double Trouble in Recovery (DTR)
Double Trouble in Recovery (DTR) is a twelve-step fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other so that they may solve their common problems and help others to recover from their particular addiction(s) and manage their mental disorder(s).

DTR is designed to meet the needs of the dually-diagnosed, and is clearly for those having addictive substance problems as well as having been diagnosed with a psychiatric disorders.

A Recovery Education Presentation given by trained consumer presenters for other consumers, family members, friends, professions, and lay audiences. It's a tool to educate and increase awareness about the true nature of brain disorders, commonly known as mental illnesses.

We are willing and ready to do these presentations to any group interested.from consumers, Law enforcement officials, any community or civic organizations, etc.
Community Based:
Wellness Recovery Action Plan(tm):
The Wellness Recovery Action Plan(tm) (WRAP) is a popular symptom monitoring and response system that is being used all over the world; it teaches about wellness tools and strategies, such as medication management, getting good health care, stress reduction, diet, exercise, changing negative thoughts to positive, and developing a wellness lifestyle.

The creator of the WRAP, Mary Ellen Copeland, MS, MA, is an author, educator and mental health recovery advocate who has recovered from bipolar disorder.

Educational Assistance
Eli Lilly offers people diagnosed with schizophrenia or other related disorders scholarships to aid them in acquiring educational and vocational skills that they need to reintegrate into society. In 2002 more than 80 people were awarded the Reintegration Scholarship. To get an application and more information, visit the The Center for Reintegration website.

Most of the major drug companies provide programs for supplying free drugs or assisting consumers who do not have health insurance coverage.
