In a category all by itself -- NAMI --  The NAMI national site covers all the bases.  A good place to start.  (and it has the most comprehensive list of links dealing with mental illness in the universe)

North Carolina Mental Hope  Our efforts also include awareness efforts directed toward the media, public and policy makers with NCMentalHope.org, a resource of updated daily news from across the nation and the NCAdvocacy discussion group, a network of more than 100 mental health advocates from across the state. We also maintain a number of email lists to update advocates and the media statewide on issues of concern. And from our "legislative contact page," citizens are able to conveniently email elected officials, including the entire General Assembly if so desired.

Governors Advocacy Council for Persons with Disabilities  This is the protection and advocacy agency for North Carolina. site describes what it does, what its priorities are, and regional and state phone numbers to call for assistance or to report abuse.

The Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law  The pre-eminent source of information about legal advocacy for the civil rights and human dignity of people with a mental disability.

Coalition for Persons Disabled by Mental Illness  The new CPDMI website has a powerful advocacy tool (Capital Advantage Legislative link).

Treatment and Advocacy Center  TAC's focus is to change our legal system's direction on "assisted treatment".  Contains a model law for assisted treatment, and a convenient reference section containing mental illness treatment statutes by state.

Bipolar disorder

National Depressive and Manic Depressive Association   The consumer organization representing the 23 million Americans who suffer with depression and manic-depression, also known as bipolar disorder.

Dr. Ivan's DEPRESSION CENTRAL  In spite of it's name, a great source of information about depression.

Handling your Psychiatric Disability in Work and School -  This site is from the Center for Psychiatric Rehabilitation, Boston University.  Terrific resource for ADA protections under the law, and practical advice.

Family Support Network of North Carolina - The Central Directory of Resources is one of the programs of the Family Support Network of North Carolina. The CDR maintains a database of service providers and support organizations. By responding to prompts and searching, you will be able to identify services that are available in your county.

Exceptional Children's Assistance Center - ECAC is a parent training and information center in North Carolina.  It offers a wide variety of information and workshops plus a lending library on a variety of topics including advocating for children and special education issues.

Weaver's Website - A website for parents of children with brain disorders by Diane Weaver (NAMI NC Board Member). Solid advice and tips born out of experience and learning.
