CREATING A CIRCLE OF CARING: the
Church and the Mentally Ill, by Shirley H. Strobel
Creating a Circle of Caring: the Church and the Mentally Ill is a
curriculum designed to sensitize adults in the church to the plight of
those suffering from severe and persistent mental illness and their
families.
The teaching sessions (12 one-hour or 6 two-hour sessions) build on a
Biblical- based Theological Reflection, calling congregations to become
the Body of Christ and minister to their suffering brothers and sisters.
To equip them for this service, the curriculum seeks to establish empathy
with the mentally ill through use of extensive self-statements and a case
study of a mother whose son suffers from schizophrenia. The second half of
the curriculum focuses on what practical things churches can do:
developing friendships with persons who are mentally ill, integrating such
persons into the life of the church, becoming an advocate for legislative
measures that benefit and protect the mentally ill, and, finally, becoming
a provider of rehabilitation services, such as housing and social clubs.
